Our story Est. 2004 · Charlton, Mass.

It started with one ladder and a borrowed truck.

Jace was sixteen the summer he started carrying bundles up a ladder for his uncle’s crew. By twenty-five he could look at a roof from the street and tell you how many winters it had left.

In 2004 he bought a used dump trailer, painted his name on the truck door and started knocking on doors in Charlton. His sons, Caleb and Wyatt, grew up sorting nails in the shop. Today each of them runs a crew.

It is still a small company on purpose. The person who climbs up to inspect your roof is a Jace or one of his sons, and so is the person who walks it with you when it’s done.

What’s under the shingles

Seven layers, one roof.

  1. Roof deckSolid plywood. Soft spots get replaced, never covered over.
  2. Drip edgeMetal trim that steers water into the gutter, not behind it.
  3. Ice & water shieldA self-sealing membrane along the eaves, where ice dams push water uphill.
  4. Synthetic underlaymentA tough, breathable second roof under the shingles.
  5. Starter stripSeals the first course down so the wind can’t lift it.
  6. Architectural shinglesHand-nailed, six nails each, right in the nailing strip.
  7. Ridge vent & capLets the attic breathe, so winters don’t rot the deck.
An exploded roof: deck, drip edge, ice and water shield, underlayment, starter strip, shingles and ridge vent

Where roofs leak

Water is sneaky. We know where it hides.

Tap a marker to see the seven places we check first.

  1. Chimney flashing Cracked mortar and lifted flashing let water run down inside the chimney chase. We re-flash with step and counter flashing.
  2. Skylight It’s almost never the glass. The flashing kit around it wears out first, so we replace it with the roof.
  3. Vent pipe boot The rubber collar around a plumbing vent cracks in the sun after about ten years. A twenty-minute fix, if it’s caught early.
  4. Valleys Two roof planes pour all their water down one line. Worn valleys are where we see the most rot.
  5. Missing shingles One windstorm lifts a tab; the next rain finds the nail holes. We match and replace them the same week.
  6. Ice dams Snow melts, refreezes at the cold edge, and backs water up under the shingles. Ice & water shield and better attic venting stop it.
  7. Gutters Clogged gutters overflow behind the fascia board and rot the roof edge from below.

Free attic inspection

Bring a flashlight.

Move your pointer over the attic (or tap around on a phone). Five problems are hiding up here.

Inside an attic: rafters, roof boards and insulation, with five problems hidden in it
  • Water stain A slow leak, usually at a nail or flashing above.
  • Daylight at the ridge If light gets in, so does rain.
  • Frosty nail tips Condensation: the attic can’t breathe.
  • Mold on the decking Trapped moisture, usually on the north side.
  • Wet insulation Flattened and dark: it stopped insulating.

Our promise

We leave every job cleaner than we found it: magnets over the lawn twice, the gutters cleared out, and not one nail left in your driveway.

Every shape

If it has a roof, we’ve been up on it.

Gable

The classic triangle. Sheds snow and rain fast, and is the easiest to re-roof.

Hip

Slopes on all four sides. Stands up to wind better than any other shape.

Gambrel

The barn roof: two slopes per side, and loads of room upstairs.

Mansard

Steep sides, nearly flat top. Common on older town houses.

Saltbox

Long slope in the back, short in the front. Pure New England.

Shed

One single slope. Additions, porches and modern houses.

Low-slope

Looks flat, drains slightly. Membrane, not shingles.

Cape with dormers

Side gables with dormers poking out. Half the houses on the street.

How a job goes

Six steps. No surprises.

Each step lands on top of the last, the way the courses go on a roof.

Questions

Good questions, straight answers.

How long does a new roof take?

Most homes are done in a single day. Big or steep roofs take two, and we never open more roof than we can close by evening.

Can you put new shingles over the old ones?

We can, but we won’t recommend it: you can’t see the deck underneath, and a second layer adds a ton of weight.

Do I need to be home?

No. We do ask to walk the finished roof with you, which can be that evening or the next day.

What if it rains in the middle of the job?

We watch the radar and keep tarps on the truck. If a shower pops up, the roof is covered within minutes.

Will you work with my insurance company?

Yes. We photograph every bit of storm damage and meet the adjuster on the roof if they’d like.

Do you really pick up every nail?

We run rolling magnets over the lawn and driveway twice, then once more if you have a dog.
